How To Half Double Crochet

Moving on from the single crochet, we will now learn how to half double crochet. It will be a little bit trickier but I know you can do it. Remember to take your time and be patient. After you master this, move on to double crochet. You can do it!

PRO TIP - Whenever you get to the end of a row to turn your work around. All patterns will call for you to turn your work around.

For every single crochet, we always do a chain one at the beginning of each stitch. This gets your work the same thickness as the single crochet. So, when you do a half double crochet, you do the same thing. With single crochet, we always chain one and then we go into the first stitch. We’re going to do that same thing with the half double crochet.With the single crochet, we inserted it, then yarned over. On half double crochet, we yarn over first, then we insert our hook right in that first chain for our first stitch. Yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook, and there you have it.

Yarn over, insert your hook, yarn over again, you have three on the hook now. Yarn over, pull it through all three loops on hook and the half double crochet is accomplished. When you get to the end of the row, you will see a little bump.  If you look at it when it’s flat you can definitely see one more stitch is needed. So, like we’ve been working, put the yarn over first. Insert your hook into the little, last hole and then pull up a loop. Yarn over. Pull through all three. You made it to the end of the row!

Be sure to keep practicing that half double crochet, be patient with yourself, and you’ll learn it. Once you do, move on to the double crochet.
